Day 3

Fly Pokhara to Jomson. Trek to Kagbeni (2810m)

The day starts with an early morning 30 minute flight to Jomsom. Then it’s a half day easy trek to Kagbeni, an impressive village also gateway to Mustang - a long forbidden region of Nepal. Spend the rest of the day exploring Kagbeni - its narrow alleyways and tunnels, irrigation canals, fields of wheat and barley and a beautiful Gompa.

Day 4

Kagbeni to Chele (3050m)

Today we enter Mustang and following the river Kali Gandaki over a series of small ridges. Across the river we can see Kang Gompa (first of many monasteries). Approaching village of Tangbe are distinctive black, red and white chortens that typify upper Mustang region. The village is surrounded by fields of wheat, barley and buckwheat, interspersed with small apple orchards. We cross the river and ascend to the village of Chele. Here the decorations of the houses display strong influence of Tibetan culture.

Day 5

Chele to Ghiling (3570m)

The trail today is characterised by the crossing of a series of large spurs. At the top of each are chortens and an excellent view of this barren but beautiful countryside. The valleys that dissect the trail have cool streams and juniper trees to enable us to relax, before continuing on for a long day on the trail. These passes are at altitudes up to 3800m. We may spot some ancient meditation caves, some 700 years old!

Day 7 Charang2.jpg

Day 6

Ghiling to Tsarang/Charang (3560m)

Today we head to Nyi La Pass which will be one of the highest point of the trek (4050m). The pass is the south boundary of the Lo Kingdom (Mustang) and thus offers fantastic views both south towards Annapurna and further into Mustang. We descend to the Qumona Khola and pass a spectacular series of mani walls to the village of Charang with it's huge white dzong and red gompa. During the day you will pass many chortens along the way. Always keep to the left as it is bad 'Karma' to go the wrong way round.

Day 9 Lo Manthang2.jpg

Day 8

Tsarang/Charang to Lo Mathang (3830m)

We leave the Charang Khola and climb the ridge to 3800m for our first view of the walled city of Lo Manthang, capital of Mustang. The trail drops to a stream and then climbs onto the plateau where the city is situated. The only gate is in the north east corner and we make our way to the entrance. The white washed walls enclose around 150 homes, Gompas and a palace. Forbidden and isolated from the rest of the world, Lo Manthang has evolved with its own distinctive culture and tradition. Here we have the chance to experience a city largely untouched by modern civilisation.

There are often herds of yaks high up in the hills as they prefer to stay over 4000 meters where it’s cooler. We then descend past several settlements before the final descent into Dhakmar where we spend the night.
